[...] Closer, Mike Nichols. Take four pretty people who are otherwise annoying as hell, and make them fall for each other in various combinations. Hell, make one of them turn into a stripper. THAT would be pure movie magic. Such it was for Natalie Portman, Jude Law, Clive Owen, and Julia Roberts. Owen went on to better things, for sure, but here he - as well as the other four - comes off looking metaphorically awful. And Nichols is no slouch in the movie biz, having directed The Graduate, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and The Birdcage, among others. There’s no wit, there’s no charm, although there’s plenty of beauty, it’s barely skin deep. [...]

[...] Black Sunday, John Frankenheimer. This 1977 “thriller” is about a terrorist plot to kill a bunch of people during the Super Bowl, but it’s largely suspenseless and dull. This from the man who directed The Manchurian Candidate and Birdman of Alcatraz. What was he thinking? No, don’t answer that; it’s rhetorical, that means you don’t have to answer. Frankenheimer probably needed the cash. But at least you get to see Bruce Dern unhinged, and you know that never happens in movies. [...]

[...] Signs, M. Night Shyamalan. M. Night suckered me into watching this crop-circles flotsam when it came out. Hey, the man did The Sixth Sense, which was fantastic, and Unbreakable, which was moderately awesome, but this one fell completely flat. Stupid kids, pious-to-a-fault dad, dopey brother - who’s really making those circles in the field, anyway? Lowlight? The rubber-suit alien who looks RIGHT out of 1954’s Creature from the Black Lagoon. Poorly written, badly acted, and a completely nonexistent special effects budget. Characters change from wacky to serious and back at the blink of an eye, thereupon jettisoning all you knew about them - or cared to, thankfully. [...]

I wasn't that impressed with Eastern Promises. I thought it was gratuitously violent. Naomi Watts is beautiful with her delicate femininity, so I don't mind watching her. The story is kind of hard to follow. There is a lot of style in the movie, but not a lot of substance. This is definitely not the first movie to have that issue.

I'm not under 30 and don't normally watch a movie specifically for "things that blow up", but FWIW - I got totally sucked in by what was happening & had a great time.

On the other hand, compare the movies to the comic strip (not the comic book), and they're worlds apart in terms of excitement. In the strip, PP whines at the TV set.

Yeah...this whole series has been a major disappointment for me. Not a single one of the Spider-man movies captured the same excitement level from a number of the animated versions. There was one Spider-man animated series that was airing just before the release of the first Spider-man movie and that cartoon always had me on the edge of my seat. It was fast-paced, unpredictable and exciting. And best of all, Mary Jane wasn't such a poor-me drama queen. Compared to that series, the movies are downright boring.

Good review.

I have to say I love this film - it's not intelligent, you just have to sit back a laugh it up. Slapstick comedy at it's best.

Well, not being a fan of Costner myself I loved this movie! I was hooked from the opening and never walked away from this flick. I thought that Hurt was outstanding and I was just mesmerized when he was on screen. It was nice to see Demi Moore back on screen. I thought that her role (thouigh not real significant) was played with vigor and she had some nuts. I think that Moore should have her own action movie (one that she's not bald headed in). The movie on the whole kept me guessing and the ending was great. Nice job to the filmmaker for making this without a studio behind them. This movie could have been a complete disaster if a studio had gotten a hold of it.

That's kind of the point, about the song's appearing in ACO. It was the juxtoposition that made it work. Playing a hard-ass heavy metal tune would have been boring and uncreative.

Lists like these are supposed to be personal. They can't be objective, certainly, because "weird" is subjective unto itself.

Weirdest? Not really, have seen some that were weirder, but I think that some of these are among the worst movies ever made.

A Clockwork Orange, while acclaimed, was a BAD adaptation of the novel that never quite made the point, IMO. I do have to laugh when I think about the licensing of the song "Singing In The Rain", did the rights owner have any idea of what they were going to do with it when they took the cash? lol Not exactly the kind of exposure I would have wanted for MY song, if you get my drift. (Not exactly Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds, was it?) :)

As for the others, most are "B" (or even lower) grade movies, IMO, so kind of hard to say that the article's picks are any better than any one else's. I think your pick of Jacob's Ladder is better suited for being weird. I think there is too much personal taste reflected in this list to be more than just "interesting." I, personally, would put most of the "chick flicks" in the "weird movie" category, but then again, thats just me. :)

Of course, I haven't seen any of the Lord of the Rings films, any of the Harry Potters, any of The Godfathers, any of the Shreks, or pretty much anything that was released in the last 5 years, unless it could be classified as a "Summer Blockbuster."
